TWENTY-FOUR

“How many rebels are in this stronghold?” I asked, staring at the map of North America on the oak table positioned in the center of the dining room.

Dozens of markings peppered the map. Some represented other rebel strongholds. Others marked covens who were rebel allies, and others who were not. Many of the marks were in unfamiliar locations, but there were some I knew. Mainly, the location of the shifter packs spread throughout the continent.

“Twelve-hundred, give or take,” Chase answered. He stood on the other side of the table. We were alone in the room for now, but that would change at the top of the hour.

It was the middle of the afternoon on my second day since escaping the Graystone coven, and I’d thrown myself into learning all I could about the rebel organization.

How they ran.

Who lead them.

What their next plan of attack against Hugh and his dominating allies would be…

I hadn’t accepted the role as the rebellion’s figurehead yet, but that didn’t deter the reverent whispers I heard every time I passed someone in the stronghold.

The attention was uncomfortable, but at least it allowed me to sit in on the rebellion’s strategy meetings. The first would begin in less than ten minutes, and I was eager to learn even more about the movement.

I pursed my lips when I heard Chase’s answer. He, as the Wilds Pack beta, had quickly fallen into a leadership role within the rebellion. His skill as a sorcerer and a shifter were invaluable assets. “Twelve-hundred isn’t a lot,” I remarked.

“It is when you consider most of us are sorcerers, sorceresses, or vampires.”

Fair enough.

Leaning forward, I pressed my finger against the marker placed in Montana. “Why is the Badlands’ Pack marker different from the Moors and Northeastern Packs?” The latter two had blue markers over their relative locations, while Alpha Kurt’s pack had a red marker. With unease, I noticed it was the same color as the Coastal Pack’s marker.

“The Moors and Northeastern Packs were not surprised by Graystone’s aggression. They’ve been wary of him for decades, and immediately pledged their assistance to the rebellion when Asher reached out to them.”

Surprise hit me. I’d been under the impression no other packs were wary of the sorcerer leader. Clearly, I was wrong.

“And Alpha Kurt?”

“He’s undecided,” Chase replied with a frown.

“Alpha Kurt is older,” I muttered, more to myself than Chase. Realization dawned. “His son isn’t old enough to lead the pack if anything should happen to him. His hesitation makes sense.”

“Perhaps,” Chase allowed. “But that doesn’t change the fact we need all the help we can get to ensure we can take down Graystone, once and for all.”

I didn’t disagree with him, but I was curious what he thought a group of non-magical shifters could do. Shifters had remarkable strength, and they’d serve as effective foot soldiers, but they wouldn’t be able to stand against magic. I couldn’t help but share my thought out loud.

Chase’s lips parted, ready to answer, but we were interrupted by Kayla.

“Who’d
